Installing an SSD drive in a T400

by Sebastien
(Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

Hello,

Laptop: Lenovo T-400
New SSD: Intel SSDSA2M080G2GC 2.5"

In your article about installing new SSD drives in a T-22 and T-23 you said you made an image of the OS. Could you possibly let me know how do I make that? I'm currently running XP.

Once I have the OS image in a USB drive, and I swap my HD (in my T-400) with the SSD, when I boot my T-400 with the SSD now acting as the main (and only HD) will it recognise a USB drive so I can transfer the OS into the SSD?

The intel SSD drive does not have a USB connection.

Maybe you could provide me with the details in the steps you gave in your web article? That would be much appreciated.

Thanks again
Sebastien

Creating and transfering an OS image to a SSD
by: Support

Hello Sebastien,

The steps you need to take are:

If you don't have a program for creating an image of a partition you will need to buy one, your choices are varied but these two I have used succesfully:

Symantic Ghost
Acronis True Image

Next you will need a way to boot the computer with out accessing the hard drive you need to make the image of (the C: or Boot partiton of that hard drive).

If you make a boot floppy test it to see if it can see an external USB drive

If you use a external USB hard drive you can make that bootable see this page: How to make a bootable usb hard drive or see pp 202 of my Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Or you could install a second OS on the hard drive in the computer and use this method of making your image: Dual Boot for your computer or see pp 245 of my Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Either way you need a way to boot the computer, once you have made your image you swap out the mechanical hard drive for the SSD.

Using the XP install CD you will need to make a 15 - 20 Gig partition on the SSD, once you have the partition made you then put your image back on the SSD.

To get that partiton to boot you have to make it Active, the easiest way to do that is with the XP Install CD, once it has started go to the Repair (press the 'R' key) and you will be at a command line.

Select the partiton from the menu, it should only be the # 1 on the menu.

You will need the Administrator's password to continue. (If you don't know that password at this time change it BEFORE you make your image or you will not beable to make the partition bootable).

Once you have entered the password your will be at the C: prompt.

You have to give the program two commands to 'repair' the boot sector and make the partition active, they are:

FIXBOOT

FIXMBR

And they have to be spelled as above and in that order or XP will not start.

Hope this helps ...

Hard disk tools
by: Max

Hello,
the software is free for Seagate, Western digital ...
Just go to support page on your HDD manufacturer and download the clone software.

*** Edit Support ***

That is true and comes on or with some new drivs, however it is trial software, what if you need it two months or a year from now? Your trial has ran out and your image may be worthless ...
