I need administrator rights.

by Marcia
(St. Cloud, MN)

I have a Dell laptop computer. I sent it to Dell a couple of months ago for some warranty work. Since I've gotten the computer back, I don't have administrator rights. I am unable to download some software because of this. I am also unable to delete entries in my virus software because I don't have administrator rights. (Obviously, very important to get resolved.)

I have the Vista operating system. I am the sole user on the computer. I am listed as the administrator. I have tried to activate the hidden administrator in Windows with no success. I have tried to "right click" and run as administrator with no success.

Do you know how I can obtain Administrator Rights on my computer?

Thank you.

Administrator Rights for Vista
by: Support

Hello Marcia,

When your computer first starts do you have to use the ctrl-alt-del keypress to log on?

If so try this -

Log off then when you press the ctrl-alt-del type in Administrator in the user id block, I would imagine there isn't a password for the id.

If you don't use the ctrl-alt-del keypress and the Desktop appears you will have to this procedure in the Safe Mode (see the end of this post for how to get in to the Safe Mode if you have never done it before).

Once you are logged on as the Administrator then:

Then right click on My computer and select Manage from the menu. When the Management Console opens go down to the 'Users and Groups' click on the '+' sign to open up the menu, click on Users, in the right window will be a list of users for the computer. Find you id, right click and bring up the properties.

Click on the 'Members of' tab. There should be one or two entries, one will be users, the other may be Administrators. If it is there high light it and then remove it. Then save your settings, close the properties page. Then reopen it go back to the 'Members of' then click on the Add button. You can either type in Administrators or do a search, if you seach you have to click on the Advanced button to find the Administrators Group. Add it back, click the 'Apply' button, then close the properties page. Close the Management Console and do a restart not a log off.

If it isn't there then do the 'Add' procedure above, then restart.

Check to see if you are in the Administrators group when the computer restarts by opening the Management Console and look at your id with the procedure above.

Safe Mode

If you can't get to the Administrator's ID in normal mode restart your computer and when you see the Starting Windows logo press the F8 key, to go in to the Safe Mode, you have to be fast to get it to work, you may have to do it a couple of times to get it to take.

Log on with the Administrators ID, then use the procedure above to set your Administrator rights.

If you can not log on as the Administrator in either the Normal or Safe Mode then you will have to contact Dell to get the password.

If Dell says there isn't a password then you will have to delete a file and move a file to reset all the passwords.

Let me know if you get it to work.

Hope this helps...
