I can't connect my Dell mini to wireless

by Naomi
(Kahului, HI)

I just bought a Dell 10" laptop with wireless (DELL 1397 WLAN Mini-Card).

I have a desktop computer at home (DSL connected) and also have a laptop running on a wireless router belkin 54g)which I installed years ago on my desktop CPU .

I dont remember having to input any information (like network key) when I set up my lap top.

My dell mini shows this message: no connectivity to the wireless but it does show my belkin wireless as a wireless network.

I have it secured with a password which i know. however, when I click on the belkin wireless icon, it asks for the network key which I don't know what that is.

The message above that says The wif-fi protected acess password must have between 8 and 63 characters.

Thanks

Wireless SSID
by: Support

Hello Naomi,

To connect to the wireless router you need to pieces of information -

The SSID (System Secutiry Identification)
The password

If you have forgotten the SSID you can find it on another computer that uses wireless connected to your router.

Go to My Netowrk Places, right click, seletc properties from the menu.

On the properties page go to the first box 'Connect Using' and select configure.

Go to the Advanced tab, look for SSID and highlight it. In the right window will be the SSID.

Now using the SSID first then the password second you should be able to connect.

If you don't have another computer that is wireless check the user's manual on how to setup the router, one of the steps to setting up the router is to set the SSID, your router may display the old one. Mine doesn't.

Hope this helps...

Response to Wirless SSID
by: Naomi

Thanks for the information. I got the SSID and know my password but this info does not help me connect to my wireless. I also forgot this piece of information which I apologize for. When I turn on my Dell mini, the wireless connection status, the status is : limited or no connectivity. It also asks for a network key.. the computer is trying to autenticate the connection status and is unable too. The encryption type says TKIP, Key absent, Gateway IP address "not available and Client IPV6 address "not available". Its trying to acquire the network address but unable to.

Problem solved
by: Naomi

thank you very much for your help. I called Dell and they told me it was a setting problem and they helped me fix the resolution (it was set too high) to solve the wireless problem. it seems odd that it was just a slight problem but yet it solved my problem and thanks for your help, time and assistance in taking the time out to help me. I really appreciated it.
