HP Laptop will not boot with two memory modules

by Bill
(Mahopac, NY)

I have an HP Pavilion XT1170 laptop which has suddenly started locking up and then not going through POST. I found that if I removed the external 256MB RAM that the system would run using the internal RAM. I thought this was a simple case of a bad RAM module. However, when I swapped the two RAM modules, the system still worked. I then left out the RAM from the internal slot and tried each one in the external slot and both worked! However, if I plugged both modules in, the system would lock up during POST. This tells me it is not the memory and not the memory slots.
Once, after letting the PC set overnight, it succeeded in booting with both memory modules and started running MEMTST86. This ran for about a minute and then the PC locked up.
Have you any idea where to proceed to determine where the problem is (i.e., motherboard, processor, etc)?

Memory fails when two modules installed
by: Support

Hello Bill,

There are two options when a memory module is not reconized.

Your first option is the easiest and cheapest.
Remove both batteries from the laptop, that is the power battery and the BIOS battery. The BIOS battery is normall accessed under the power battery. Some of them are difficult to disconnect, check the manufactures web site if the owners manual doesn't have instructions.

Leave the BIOS battery out for five minutes unless there is a jumper to clear the BIOS, then before reconnecting the BIOS battery and installing the power battery power the system up with both modules installed on AC power.

If this clears your problem it was a corrupt BIOS setting, if not them the Memory management chip set has failed, this means a motherboard replacement.

For parts www.LaptopRepairGuru.com has a nice selection.

Hope this helps...
