How to choose the right ssd to replace my notebook drive that crashed?

by John
(Cleveland, OH)

My hard drive in my hp pavilion dv6565us notebook crashed and I would like to replace it with a ssd. How do I find the right ssd for my notebook? Here are the specs for my current drive 200GB SATA 4200RPM 2.5in 9.5mm thick. It would be easy to just order the replacement drive from hp but the original drive only lasted about 2 years. Thanks in advance for any advice you may have for me.

SSD to replace failed Hard Drive
by: Support

Hello John,

Any 2.5 inch hard drive or SSD will fit your computer. With either type you need to look at your computer specifications or the hard drive and be sure to order the same interface, that is the connection between the device and the computer. If you computer is fairly new (you say it is 2 years old) then it should be a SATA interface.

As for the SSD you would be better off with the SSD except for one thing - Cost. Currently the largest SSD is a 256 Gig and they run around $400 or so. A 500 Gig mechanical hard drive will cost about $120.

So the trade off is reliablity and ruggednest over size and cost.

In the How to... and Upgrade sections of this site are some articles on SSD's that will help you if you decide to go that route.

Hope this helps.
