harddrive

by Tony
(Apple Valley, Ca USA)

What would make my laptop keep going to the screen to pick safe mode or restore to the last working place? I hit the safe mode and it comes up with a full screen of:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\systems

We tried putting the hard drive into the home pc but it tells us the hard drive is not formatted is the hard drive no good or is there a way to fix it?

Thank you for you time

Hard Drive failure or Partition Corrupt?
by: Support

Hello Tony,

With the drive in the laptop the Operating System will not start.

When it starts you get a message thas says that the system had a problem on the last session and needs to be repaired?

If you go in to the 'Safe Mode' and you get the boot.ini text on the screen (that is what you described in your post) then I would say the hard drive is corrupt.

It maybe failing or it maybe a virus.

Your best course of action is to use ERD Commander or BartPE and copy your data off the hard drive BEFORE doing anything to the drive.

Here is a page I wrote about using ERD or BartPE -

BartPE Software Review

Erd Software Review

To do this you will have to put the drive back in the laptop, make the bootable cd, then have an external device to store your data on, such as a Pen Drive or an external hard drive.

Once you have your data off the drive you will need to run some diagnostics on the drive to see if it has failed or is infected with a virus.

If you made the ERD or BartPE bootable disk you can add anti virus/trojan/spyware programs to the disk, then scan the drive for infections.

If you don't have an infection then try to reinstall the Operating System. If you are going to do this I would suggest you delete any current partitions and start out fresh, don't install the Operating System over the current one.

Installing a Hard Drive

Hope this helps...
