Hard drive problem

by John
(Jesup,Ga.)

Hard drive problem, the hard drive use to spin with enough noise to be heard well then quiet down and the light would go off.

Now it spins with the same startup noise but won't stop.

The activity light stays on and the monitor does not bring up the desktop page.

Hard drive noise
by: Support

Hello John,

Normally you will hear a 'spin up' then the noise level will be low, you will hear on some drives the head seaking from track to track when accessed.

When a drive is making a lot of noise and the activity light comes on never goes off tells me that the hard drive is or has failed.

The fact that the Operating System will not load also tells me that the hard drive has failed.

You can remove and replace the hard drive yourself and reload the OS or you can take it to a repair shop.

If you want to do it yourself this is the page to start at -

Installing a Hard Drive

If you do it yourself try to not damage the old hard drive when you replace it, you can try to get your daat off of the drive by making the new drive the Master and the old drive Slave if they are IDE drives, if they are SATA drives then you will just set the new drive as the 1st drive in BIOS and on the Boot section set it for the Boot Drive.

Hope this helps...
