Gateway M465E laptop battery charging issue

by David V.
(Salisaw,Okla. US.)

Greeting Monte!

Love your site by the way.

My Gateway M465E laptop will not go past 3% in the bio's battery test. Left it on for a little over 2 hrs. & still at 30%.

Battery test button on the battery light's up at 25% when I press the button on the back. Should I just merely leave the laptop alone & see what it will do after the 6 hr. test procedure in the bio's test procedure?

Battery is quire old but did charge up at one time at 95% & thought maybe I did the wrong thing going into Window's power options & change something. Not very familiar with those settings.
Enabled hibernation during the bio's test like you mention in your battery section.

Thanks!
David

Battery will not charge past 30%
by: Support

Hello David,

Once a battery has been used for a long period of time (ie years) it will degrade to a point where it either will not hold a charge or charge at all.

When you charge the battery check the battery case for how hot it is getting by touch. If it is hot enough to be unconfortable to your finger tips then I would say the battery needs to be replaced.

If you continue to try charging the battery once it has degraded you could damage the power supply in the laptop by excessive amperage the bad battery will try to draw from the power supply. The charging circuit in the power supply should keep the battery from drawing to much current but over time it too will degrade.

So the bottom line is before you damage your power supply replace the battery.

Note:
I have a seven year old IBM T-30 that the OEM battery will still charge, it will retain the charge and will last almost an hour. OEM batteries would last between 1.5 and 2 hours when new depending on the power settings. How did I do this? I only charge the battery when I knew I would need it, say on a trip. I always discharge the battery to it's lowest point before removing and storing the battery until needed again.
