Firewire conection on Ultra Multy Port 5.5" Dashboard?

by Kermit
(El Paso, Texas, U.S.A.)

Monte, me again the other day while at the local computer supper store I picked up an interesting dashboard this thing has more bells and whisles than I can use but have had some interesting results after the install. It came with 4 usb ports 2 SATA Ports 5 card reader ports front audio jacks and a firewire port. Instructions a little poor but understandable; except the connection on the mother board for the firewire. This connection for the Firewire is the same as the front Audio which has caused some confusion by those who have written about installing this and other front dashboards in their computers. The only port on my computer that matchs this is the serial port I decided not to connect it as I was unsure of the correct connection on the motherboard. One of the reviews on this dashboard stated that the installation guide was so vague that he connected to the wrong port on the motherboard and burnned up the motherboard.

So where does the firewire connect and just what is it used for?

Another oddity of this dash board is that I was able to get everything I conneted to work except the front mike. Did not connect the 2 SATA leads to the motherboard. I decided to remove the unit to see if the front mike would would work on a computer that uses a different motherboard. Results were interesting. Got the front head set and mike to work on this computer the SD card readers to work but the front USB port none of the 4 connnected to the proper headers would work checked device manager reviewed the motherboard manual and checked the BIOS all said the USB ports were working, but could not get the new hardware wizzard to show a connection to the Flash drive it did on the first computer I installed the dashboard in and the front mike head set is the main reason I purchased the dashboard. On both computers I had to go into REALTEK HD AUDIO MANAGER advance setting to get the system to reconize the front head set jack a I tested the mike on both computers in SOUNDS Recorder.

Ended up puting the dashboard back in the first computer and using the orginal system to connect the front audio which is 2 cables with jack plugs that run out the rear of the computer and plug into the rear mike and speaker jacks. Which prevents me from connecting external speakers to this computer if I want to use them.

My question is again where do I connect the fire wire on the motherboard?

Many thanks,

Kermit

P.S. Just read your interesting HOW-TO install of your computer network in the RV using laptops as servers; man that is a bundel of wires in the photo.

"header pin" location
by: Support

Hello Kermit,

In the manual that came with your motherboard look at the image that lists all the connectors, such as with my ASUS P5K on the motherboard layout page.

You will see the connectors listed as:

COM1
USBXX
USBXXX
IE1394_2

These are the connectors for external ports.

The IE1394 is the FireWire connector.

FireWire is a predecessor to USB, how ever FireWire is a lot faster than even the new USB 3.0 (due out sometime soon...)

Some devices have both USB and FireWire connectors, how ever if you decide to use FireWire you have to find and load the drivers for the OS and the device.

As for the audio there are seperate connectors and they are of a different size and number of pins, for someone to miss connect the audio to FireWire or the other way around they had to modify the cable connector or miss align it on the pints to smoke the motherboard.

Check the manual that came with the motherboard for the connector locations.

Hope this helps...

(That wire bundle is because I used cables that were a little long for the rack, I couldn't find any shorter ones so I bundled them together to keep it neat).

Thank you Monte,

The quick installation motherboard manual does not show a fire wire port on the motherboard but I downloaded the full manual in PFD for the Boistar motherboard and will review it for the connector pins.

Oh, by the way I am enjoying one of your favorite music groups "3 dog night" playing on the computer loaded on the server that you helped me build, in a 33gig music folder over 7,000 songs.

Your moble server for the RV reminds me of some of the stuff that I have installed in my own RV; in boats and cars over the years. Have been involved in the marine industry for over 40 years, installed marine electronics on more boats than I can remember.

Again thanks.

Keep up the great website.

My 14 year old God Dauther is here with me has this OLD Dell laptop (Inspiron/B130){I think her dad bought that computer about the same time she was born} that is giving her some problems want to know if I could fix it. She had decided to try to find out what is wrong with it herself and has been reading my copy of DIY Computer Repair. Can't get her to come to dinner; nose is buried in your book for the last 2 days.

Was in errror; correction!
by: Kermit

Monte, been busy.

The connector for the Fire-wire leads are the same as the RS-232 Coms Port on the Biostar G31-M7 TE mother board; and are closer to that of the Front USB Header connectors except pins 10 and 9 are different or should I say blanked. There is no fire wire port on the mother board. Do not know what would have happened if I had found a use for the fire wire and connected to the coms port.

So this is a reminder to all, that decided to do our own repairs to not connect leads on a mother board that we are unsure are the correct; and to have a copy of the motherboard manual to review befor we start the project. Most manuals can be downloaded in PFD form and copied to my documents for review.

Thanks again.

Kermit
