External hard drive shuts down computer

by Joseph
(North Hills, CA USA)

I recently bought an external hard drive for backing up pictures and music from my computer. I must have backed up program files because I could not listen to music unless the external hard drive was turned on. It worked fine for about a month. Then I went to turn on the hard drive one day and it keeps shutting down and restarting my computer! It never gets past the windows start up screen. I cant access the pictures or the music now! The minute i flip the switch for the hard drive the computer restats over and over again. I would really appreciate any advice you could give me!

Thanks!

External Hard drive
by: Support

Hello Joseph,

If your computer starts normally when the external drive is not connected I would suspect the power supply for the external hard drive or the hard drive in the enclouser.

How ever you can try this test -

If you have access to another computer try the external hard drive on that computer. If it does the same thing then you need to contact the manufacture of the external hard drive for repair/replacement.

If it doesn't cause the other computer to go in to a restart cycle then I would suspect the connector on your computer. Do you have a spare port (USB/SATA/Fire Wire) that you can try the external hard drive on? If you do have a spare port and the same thing happens then the controller (USB/SATA/Fire Wire) has failed on the motherboard.

If the controller has failed and you have a spare slot open you can buy an add on card to use while you make a decision on replacing the motherboard or the computer, they are inexpensive.

Hope this helps...
