explorer opens only websites requiring passwords, no others
by Greg
(Louisville, KY)
My teenage son was surfing (I suspect on adult sites) and I believe he opened something containing malware or a virus of some kind. I cannot open any website except sites requiring a password (ie...webmail, banking, bill pay, etc). I receive the page "internet explorer cannot display the webpage" on all other attempts. I have not tried to access any of these 'password' sites for fear of having passwords and/or user names stolen and compromising security. I've tried operating in SAFE MODE but it's the same. Any help would be appreciated.

You definatly have a virus, which one I don't know there are a lot that lock you out of web sites.
You can try to disable it through the propeties of IE, go to the Programs tab, down at the bottom is a button "Manage add-ons" click the button.
There will be a list of add-ons, which one is the virus? Unknown.
Click on each add on and disable it, I think disabling all add-ons may catch the virus.
Click ok, close the properties page, try Google, if you can open Google then download the Google Browser called Chrome, install it (Chrome isn't vurnable to a viruse that affects IE).
Once Chrome is installed you need to download a better anti-virus program, along with an anit-trojan, spyware, and malware programs.
I suggest you download indvidual programs not a suite such as Panda or Norton.
Most of these programs are shareware, that is you can use them for a certian time period before you have to pay for them.
Clean you computer from the Safe Mode, although if you still have the problem in Safe Mode then it is activating when you start IE.
Here is a page with more information about anti virus/trojan/spyware programs:
