Stop Errors
by: Support

Hello Ernie,

Normally you can find stop errors on MS Technet.com but this one isn't listed.

First: Is the drive making any new noises?
Second: Will it start the OS?

So, from what you have written I would try:

If the OS will start and load, try to get in to Safe Mode.

Once there open My Computer and select the C: drive, go to the Properties page, on the Tools tab select Check Disk, you will have to run it on the next restart, it will not run in Safe Mode.

If the OS will not start because the hard drive is either failing or corrupt you next choice is to try the Repair function of Windows.

If you have used the Repair function of the install cd then you will know how to change directories and find the program 'checkdsk.exe', it is in the i386 directory of the install cd and in the c:\windows\system32 directory.

To get the command line swithches of the checkdsk.exe type at the prompt: checkdsk.exe /? this will list all the different things the checkdisk program will do.

If the drive hasn't failed it maybe corrupt, you may have to reload the OS and your programs, do you have a backup of your data? Or an image of the OS partition? See page 159 of Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

If the drive has failed you will have to replace it, see page 59 of Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Hope this helps...
