Error on page- cannot read disc

by Dave
(Arkansas)

I have an older Gateway desktop. It has been upgraded several times.

The last was a new harddrive several months ago.

When it tries to boot I get an error that says it can't read the disc press ctrl-alt-delete to restart but it just repeats it's self.

I tried to go to safe mode but it won't recognise it and repeats the error cannot read disc.

Hard drive?

Hard drive not detected?
by: Support

Hello Dave,

Have you gone in to the BIOS setup, is the drive there?

If it isn't try this:

Check the cables for proper seating, both interface cable ends and the power cable.

When you power it up do you hear the drive spinning up?

Does the drive led light up indicating drive activity?

Do you have any bootable media such as the Operating Install or a boot able floppy/CD/Pen drive?

If you can boot from a drive other than the hard drive do you see the drive when you type c: at the command prompt in a console or if you have an ERD does it display in the drive management console?

If the answer is no to any of the above then I would surmise that the hard drive has failed.

You could take the hard drive out of the computer and put it in another computer as the second, or third, etc to see if it will come up as a test of the hard drive. That is to see if it is the hard drive / interface cable and not the motherboard drive interface.

For more information on troubleshooting hard drives see page 33 of the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Hope this helps ...
