ERD and Vista

by Lynn Moore
(Harlingen, TX)

My computer crashed yesterday. A friend gave me a copy of ERD; but when it is loading, it has the Windows XP welcome screen. It is not seeing my operating system. (Vista) Is there a separate version of ERD for Vista; or am I doing something else wrong?

Vista and ERD
by: Support

Hello Lynn,

You are correct, the ERD disk you have is not able to see the Vista file system.

This is normal for Operating Systems (OS), an older operating system can not see a newer OS because normally when a new OS is written the publisher takes lessons learned from the older OS and makes improvements to the file system.

This is what is happening to you. The XP OS on the ERD Commander disk is proabably pre 2005, if it is then it will not have the Service Pack 3 file system which can see Vista file system. So to use an ERD Commander Repair disk on your Vista installation you will need to have ERD 2005 and that one is very hard to find.

Have you tried the Repair function on the Vista install DVD?

Unfortantly MS in it's infiniate wisdom has discontinued the production and update of the ERD Commander program.

If you do go on the internet and look for ERD becarefule of scamers, I have found four on eBay that say the ERD is 2005 but the license is pirate, the ERD is 2003, or it really isn't ERD but a klude of some other OS.

My advice is if the MS Vista Install DVD Repair program can not fix the orginal installaton the only choice you have is to reinsall Vista.

Hope this helps...
