Enabling USB port in my Laptop

by Swathik
(Richmond, CA, USA)

Hi,

The USB port in my laptop has been disabled. I have tried some ways available in the internet, but that won't work. Please suggest me some ways of enabling USB ports. My laptop has Windows XP OS. Also I would like to enable Memory Card reader. Please let me know about that also.

Thanks,

USB Ports not working
by: Support

Hello Swathik,

When you say your USB ports are disabled where are you seeing them as being disabled?

If it is in the Device Manager (they will show up with either a circle with a red x or yellow caution sign).

The easiest way to correct your problem is to disconnect any USB devices, then in the Device Manager uninstall all the items under the Uninversal Bus Controllers. There may be quite a few devices under the main heading.

Once you have uninstalled then power down the computer and restart.

The new hardware found wizard will run and reinstall the drivers.

If this doesn't fix the problems with the USB then I am of the opinion that the USB controller has failed.

Hope this helps...

Enabling USB port in my Laptop
by: Swathik

Hi,

There is a security system that is in effect in the office I work. So whenever i log in to my office network, it my USB is disabled. Whenever I plug in a thumb drive, the system detects and shows up in the My Computer, but when I access that drive, it shows "Access is Denied". Now I am in an assignment away from the office and I need to enable the USB for read and write access. Please help me with some solution.

Thanks

User Profile and GPO's
by: Support

Hello Swathik,

Ok I understand what is happening now.

Your company has demeed that USB devices are a hazard to the overall well being of their computers and network and has put in to place policies to stop their use.

There is a policy domain wide that turns off all usb ports on all computers? To find out you will have to contact your company's Systems Administrator(s).

You may have to ask for your 'Roaming' Profile to have the USB ports turned on.

The Group Polciy Option (GPO) is domain wide and I doubt if they will turn it off on one computer, it is also in the 'Local Machine' policies and flows down from the Domain.

You can not modify the policy because you do not have rights to them.

It is unfortunate that the company has to do this but someone either introduced a virus or did some other deed that cost your company a lot of pain and money so the cure is to turn off anything that will stop this from happening again.

Hope this helps...
