A DIY Computer Repair E-Book

Computer Repair Is Too Hard, Unless You're A Geek!
Nonsense!

There Are Two Ways To Get Your
Computer Repaired -
Hire a Geek Or
 Do It Yourself

No Geeks here!

My computer has XP,  it was really fast when I first bought it.
Then I started to notice that it was slowing down...

I thought I may have done something to it or maybe my PC
was broke but the truth was a lot more simple...

Discover over seventy repairs
 you can do yourself

Hi, I am Monte Russell

I have worked with and on computers for over 20 years. In that time I discovered that not all computer repairs require a trip to a repair shop or a visit from a repair tech. In fact more than 87% of all computer repairs take fifteen minutes or less. With a MCSE, an AAS in Electronics Design Technology, and numerous certifications I can assure you that you can fix a computer!

The question you have to answer is -
"Do I want to save a substantial amount of money?"

If you do then read on, if not thanks for stopping by.

These are a few of the problems that came to my email in-box asking for help on -

Q and A Submission-

Anti Virus CD??

by Richard
(LB CA.)

Do you have repair aids?

I went to a repair shop and all the repair man did was to put a CD or DVD in and walk away for 25-30 minutes which took most of the virus away and which fix my computer and cost me   $75.00.

  • My browser has windows popping up all over the place.
  • My computer that keeps restarting for no apparent reason.
  • No network or very slow network connectivity to the Internet.
  • Motherboard errors on startup.
  • No Video when I turn on my computer.
  • My computer is very slow, last week it was fine.
  • A computer shop fixed my computer and now I have more problems than it went in with.
  • Do I have hard drive Failure?
  • Data loss after replacing dead hard drive.
  • My computer locks up for no reason.
  • The keyboard stop working all the sudden.
  • My computer reports memory errors on startup.

That is quite a list isn't it?

And if I hadn't helped these problems would have cost the sender at least $40 or more an hour to fix each one!

Would you repair them yourself if you knew how?

Here is a this list of things you can do -

  1. Build a custom PC - Chapter 6
    • By building your own custom pc you will be able to use higher quality parts. With higher quality parts your computer will last longer and be easier to upgrade.
    • Doing the labor yourself will save you a substantial amount of money.

  2. Upgrade PC - Chapter 2
    • Upgrading an existing computer is cheaper than buying a new computer.
    • By upgrade one or two components at a time.
    • By upgrading single components over a period of time you can shop for bargains and save money.

  3. Back up your data - Chapter 9
    • Your data is one of your most valuable resources. If you loose your data in a hardware failure would you be able to reconstruct it?
    • The chances of that are very small.
    • An email I received a while ago -

My laptop shut down all the sudden.

When I start it up I hear a single 'click' then the screen says 'Invalid disk'.

I know the hard drive is dead, how would I get my files off of it?

If he had a backup then he would have less to worry about.

      Do you have a backup?

    • With a backup of your data done on a scheduled basis a hardware failure would be less catastrophic.
    • Once you have your hardware problem fixed you can restore the data at the point of the last backup.

  4. Laptop repair - Chapter 7
    • Laptops are more popular than desktops, a survey in 2007 reveled.
    • Laptop repair is almost but not quite the same as a desktop.
    • Because of the construction of the laptop it is in a smaller case and most components are made to fit that case.
    • If you do your own repair the cost savings is in the labor.
    • The time savings would be greater by not having to find a tech that can do the repairs.

  5. Laptop battery information - Chapter 7
    • Laptop batteries are a consumable product. That is they have a built in lifetime.
    • Once a charge is applied to a battery the lifetime clock starts to tick.
    • The lifetime of a battery will depend on it’s construction and materials.
    • Once a battery will not charge anymore it is time to replace it.
    • Do not neglect this warning - a battery that will not charge or hold a charge will cause the power supply to over heat and damage it.
    • This can lead to damage of the laptop.

  6. How to open Laptop case with out destroying it - Chapter 7
    • Laptop case are made to with stand a certain amount of abuse, abuse does not that you are doing damage to the computer on purpose.
    • It happens with out you knowing it, you put the computer in a laptop carrying case, it is padded but not bullet proof.
    • To open a laptop takes some finesse, you need to know how to do it and what tools are best for opening the case with out damaging it.

  7. Build yourself a Server  - Chapter 8
    • With a server your security for your network increased a thousand fold, you can require that users have complexity in their user id and password.
    • This makes it harder for thieves to get in to your network.
    • With a server you can share files, work in collaboration on projects.
    • You can share printers instead of each user having a printer each consolidate that cost in to one or two higher quality printers and save money.
    • With a domain you can have a single log on for all applications, email, printer, and file sharing.
    • You can also cut down on the installation of applications that can be shared, installed on the server and shared by all authorized users.
    • The cost savings of all these different options in to one server is enormous when compared individually for each PC.

  8. Optimize your Operating System - Chapter 4
    • When your Operating System is first loaded your computer will run as fast as it will ever be.
    •  Once you start loading programs you can watch the speedometer fall from fast to slow.
    •  How do you over come this built in obsolescence and make your computer faster than the day you first turned it on?
    • By Optimizing the OS! By doing these procedures you can extend the lifetime of your current computer by months or even years.

  9. Make a bootable device - Chapter 4
    • What is a bootable device? And why would you need one?
    • A bootable device is a floppy, pen drive, CD, or external hard drive that you can use to start your computer if it has a hard drive failure or the Operating System becomes unusable (bootable) because of corruption, hardware problems, or a virus.

  10. Operating System Tools - Chapter 4
    • Operating System Tools are utilities that you use to defrag your hard drives, set permissions on user id’s, troubleshoot hardware problems., or work with hard drives.
    • You can also increase the security of your computer by setting services.

  11. Disaster recovery - Chapter 4
    • When you have a disaster be it a natural catastrophe or a hardware failure you need to get your computer up and running as soon as possible.
    • There are different levels of disaster recovery from recovering your data after a hard drive replacement to recovering your data to a new computer.
    • How you do this depends on how you setup your recovery plan.
    • Remember it is your data and to keep it yours safe guard it!

Now to find all the answers in this list would take a long time even with the speed of the internet today. How ever, I have them gathered up in one place.

NTLDR is Missing

by Jeremy
(St. Louis, Mo.)

Hello my name is Jeremy and my Gateway desktop has crashed, every time I turn it on it says NTLDR in missing.

I just bought a new windows XP disk and when I try to load it nothing happens I just keep getting the same message.

PLEASE HELP I have no clue where to go from here.

Thank you for your time.

  1. UPS - Uninterupable Power Supply - Chapter 10
    • This device has batteries that will supply power to your computer for a short period of time when your commercial power fails.
    • It will also protect you computer from power surges and brown out conditions ( a brown out condition is when the commercial power supplied to your building is lower than 100 volts. This condition will cause damage to computer parts).

  2. NAS - Network Attached Storage - Chapter 4
    • This is another computer on your network it’s job is to store files. Documents, images, video, and audio files, you can use it for backup purposes or as a share point for other users on your network.
    • This is not an external hard drive. You could have the NAS located in another city for Disaster Recovery purposes.

  3. Repair Checklists - Chapter 1
    • A checklist is a list of steps you would take to resolve a technical problem from hard drive problems to motherboard problems.
    • The checklists walk you through the steps one at a time the same as a technician would if you were having the repair done.

  4. Definitions / Glossary - Chapter 3
    • The Definitions / Glossary section  lists the parts of a computer. What they do and how they are described in everyday language.
    • Have a geek term?
    • You will find the answer here.

  5. Q and A Submission -

    Laptop locks up

    by Richard
    (Devon England)

I have a laptop that starts up fine then just freezes solid .

I tried in safe mode but freezes when loading files so have you got any ideas what i could try.

    Thanks Richard

  6. How To... section - Chapter 4
    • Repair is not the only thing you need to be able to do to a computer.
    • There are things that you can and need to do to keep it running in tip top condition.
    • Then there are things you need to do to safe guard your data and the computer itself.
    •  There are ways to shorten your disaster recovery from days or weeks to hours.
    • And all these procedures will save you money.

  7. Hardware reviews - Chapter 10
    • When you think about purchasing a new part or computer do you research you choices? Look for options and cost?
    • This section is where I have written reviews about some common computer components and give you a run down on their performance, the manufacture, and the customer service.
    •  Some of these reviews are glowing reports on the component and the manufacture, some are best to stay away from.

  8. Software reviews - Chapter 11
    • When you are looking for a program do you research the good, bad, and ugly of the program or just buy it and hope for the best?
    • This section gives you reports on programs to keep your computer running.
    • From Anti Virus to computer Operating System Imaging to Emergency Recovery programs. The good ones, the bad ones, and some of the down right ugly ones.
    • I also rate the program on performance, ease of installation, and customer service after the purchase.

That is over Seventy things you can fix yourself and most in less than fifteen minutes!

The if you were to pay the going rate of $40 and had to do four of these repairs that would be over $160! The savings over time will be thousands of dollars!

I want to say thanks for writing a book that is easy to follow and understand.
