dvd/cd drive is inoperable

by Carol
(Lumberton, NC USA)

Hello

Bought a Dell laptop(latitude) off of ebay, no software included.

Dvd/cd worked until I emptied some pennies out that 3 yr old nephew put in, now it doesn't work.

Device manager has it flagged, and is enabled. I don't know if it is damaged or not.

Afraid to uninstall, no software to reinstall.

Help!

Device Driver
by: Support

Hello Carol,

You can find the correct driver from Dell's web site here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

You can find them by entering the Service Tag number on the underside of the laptop or you can find them by using the model and model number.

Download them and read the readme file, it will tell you how to install the drivers.

Before you go that far there may be something in the DVD drive, you can take it out of the computer and see if there is something below the tray.

You can remove the DVD drive while the computer is powered up or you can shut the computer down then remove the DVD drive, your choice.

Before removing the drive eject or open the tray, then using the 'Safely Remove Hardware' in the taskbar tray shut the DVD down, then remove it from the computer. There should be a release either on the side next to the DVD or on the underside of the computer.

When you get the drive out of the computer open the tray all the way up then turn it over. If there is anything still in the drive you will hear it moving around.

Now if the pennies broke something inside the drive you will have to replace it.

Here is a good resource for older computer batteries, hard drives, and CD/DVD drives:

Hope this helps...
