Dual OS and no downloads

by Charles
(Texarkana, AR.)

I recently had my computer repaired by an allegedly expert repair shop and they messed it up worse than before.

Instead of repairing it they added a second OS to it and left it that way. How can I remove the second os without scrubbing the hard drive?

I don't have the installation cd.

Thank you for any help. CWT

Dual Boot OS, disabling one Operating System
by: Support

Hello Charles,

Unless you are short on storage why not use both OS's?

What are the Operating Systems? Both XP? Both Vista? Or a mix of say Viata and Windows 7?

The advantage of a Dual Boot System is that if you get say a bad virus then you could use the other Operating System to remove the virus from the effected system. Or do other OS repairs.

Now why did they load a second OS on your computer? Did they tell you?

To answer your question you can remove the second OS.

Depending on what the Operating Systems are depends on how you will remove them...

With two XP Operating Systems you would edit a file called the 'boot.ini' to remove the second partition as a bootable partiton.

Then from the command line go to the c:\windows\system32 folder.

Then type in:
fixboot

Then type in:
fixmbr

This will set the second partition as non-bootable.

It is quite involved and at this time I haven't wrtitten procedure to do this job in layman's terms.

If it is a Vista or Windows 7 install you could download a program callled Vista Boot Pro

One of the options of this program is to set the boot OS and remove any other OS, how ever you will need to use Vista/Windows 7 to make a Emergency Repair CD first or it will not work.

This page tells you how to make a computer a Dual Boot system Dual Boot for your computer

You can find more about Dual Boot System in Chapter 6, page 245, of my Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Hope this helps ..
