Dell XPS 400 Stuck in Standy By mode

by Carol
(Spanaway, WA, USA)

I purchased the computer in 2006, and everything was fine and dandy until November of 2007, then it went into stand by mode and has never come out of it.

I have tried the F8 over and over, and nothing. I have been told it's the Power Unit by various people, well 3 years later I have to get this computer up and running, and it's still stuck in stand by mode.
(After the initial standby mode fiasco, the computer was stored and not turned on).

There is power to the monitor and it is sending images (the flying windows icon) to the monitor, but nothing I have tried has worked to get that little blinkie light off of standby.

So my question is...is it the power unit? (I am hoping so because this is an easy fix) Or is it something else? Ideas, thoughts, advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Power Supply failed or other problem
by: Support

Hello Carol,

Here is what Dell says about your problme:

>green light ? Blinking green in sleep state; solid green for power-on state.

>amber light ? Blinking amber indicates a problem with the power supply inside the computer. If the system cannot boot and there is a solid amber light, this indicates a problem with the system board.

It maybe the power supply or it maybe a problem that makes it look like the power supply by drawing to much power from it. See page 9 for Troubleshooting techniques in the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual.

If you want to open the computer case (with the power cord disconnected) you can try:

1) Press down on the memory to insure it is seated.
2) Press down on any add on cards in the slots
3) Press on all cable connectors (power and drive) to insure they are seated.
4) From the power supply to the motherboard will be a large bundle of wires, this is the main power supply cable, press it down in the connector on the motherboard.

Close the case, power it up.

Any change?

Yes, it is fixed.
No, it is still the same.

Last thing to check, disconnect the power cord, open the case.

On the motherboard there is a battery, this battery is about the size of a quater, it is in a case that is soldered to the motherboard. Remove the battery.

Leave the battery out for about five minutes.

After five minutes with the battery out, close the cover on the case.

Power up the computer.

Did it start?
Yes, then the BIOS was corrupt.
No, then your power supply needs to be replaced.

If it started shut it down, disconnect the power cord.

Open case, replace battery (be sure the + side in the right position), close the case.

Power up the computer, you should get an error that tells you that the Time and Date are incorrect and the instructions for getting in to the BIOS Setup to set the Time and Date.

Once you have set the time and date restart the computer.

Is it still in standby mode?
No, it is fixed
Yes, your power supply and/or the motherboard has failed.

Note:
I would replace the power supply first, if that does not cure the problem your next choice would be the motherboard, if it is the motherboard is it cheaper to get a new computer?

Hope this helps ...
