cursor goes backwards while typing

by Bryan
(Troy PA)

Compaq Presario F700, when typing in wordpad or internet explorer or even putting in your password to login the cursor goes backwards, I ordered recovery disks and reinstalled everything, but it still does this no matter what I try. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Touchpad problem
by: Support

Hi Bryan,

It sounds more like a the touchpad is to sensitive.

To test the theory open notepad and try typing the from the numbers only, with your hand away from the touchpad.

If the cursor still goes backwards then you have a keyboard/touchpad hardware problem.

See my Laptop section for articles on removing and replacing the keyboard/touchpad if it is out of waranty.

If the cursor doesn't move, then in the control panel or if you computer is supplied with a special program for the touchpad see if there is a setting for the sensitivity.

The sensitivity is the change in resistance that the touchpad senses when you touch it, when you move your finger across the pad then the pointer/cursor moves in conjunction.

Hope this helps...

touchpad problem
by: Bryan

Ok, tried just the number keys, didn't go backward.
I did go in and change the touchpad sensitivity settings after i did the numbers, as soon as i hit a letter key the cursor went automatically to the beginning of the line. Any other ideas i could try or do you have an answer that could help or solve it. Thanks so far!

Hardware failure
by: Support

Hi Bryan,

Well if you adjusted the sensitivity and that made it worse you have some options -

A) Reverse the sensitivity and see if it does the same thing.

B) The touchpad has failed

C) You could use an external mouse and disable the touchpad.

Now C isn't a long term fix but will get you by until you can fix or get the touchpad fixed.

In the Laptop section of this site there are two articles for removing and replacing the keyboard and the touch pad.

Hope this helps...

Keyboard/touchpad Hardware failure

Keyboard/touchpad Hardware failure
Compaq Presario F700

I have found that by disabling the touchpad after installing a USB mouse this mouse seems to work like the touchpad mouse, which is about fair for both, but when typing, backwards typing still occurs. I then installed a USB keyboard and used this instead, now typing works flawless. So now my question is which one is causing the backwards typing problem, is it the keyboard or touchpad mouse or combination of both. The computer is a refurb so a warranty fix is out of the question.

Mouse and Keyboard Failure
by: Support

Hello Bryan,

Very interesting problem you have from a tech's point of view.

If two devices do the same thing that is undesiable then the controler for the device has failed.

Now the problem is that the controler for the touchpad and the controler for the USB mouse are not the same controler.

The ringer in this theroy is the USB keyboard that stops the cursor from going backwards.

I think that even with the USB mouse plugged in and the touchpad disabled it reality the touchpad may not be disabled, thus making it appear to be disabled because the problem persists until the keyboard is disabled by plugging in a USB keybaord.

This would make me suspect the keyboard and mouse are on the same connector and one of these items has failed -

The keyboard
The mouse
The ribbion cable for the keyboard/mouse
The connector for the ribbon cable
The motherboard

This is a long list to narrow it down you could try an experiment, lift up the keyboard and disconnect the ribbon cable, look at the calble to see if it has any kinks in it or if it is torn or seperated.

If the cable looks ok, look at the connector on the motherboard, you may have to use a magnifying glass to look for bent pins, missing pins, or any forgein objects that don't belong and could cause two or more pins to be shorting across eahc other.

Still looking good then your last two options are replace the keyboard/touchpad (cheapest option) or the motherboard.

I can't think of any thing else that could cause you problme.

Hope this helps...

Keyboard Problem
by: Bryan

Here is the issue I have found while typing, only certain key's make the cursor go backwards. Here are the letters q,w,e,r,u,i,o & p. The rest type/work just fine. This leads me to beleive that I now have a keyboard problem going on. Would this be your conclusion also? Or could there be something else that I'm not seeing? Thank you for all your help. I'm not sure if I told you, but this is a really great & informative website.

Keyboard Failure
by: Support

Hello Bryan,

With the testing you have done, ie. the external keybord and mouse, tells me that the keboard and mouse controller chips on the motherboard are ok.

So yes, I would agree that the laptop keyboard has failed.

Now the problem is finding a replacemet. Here is a good place to start -

http://www.laptoprepairguru.com/

Or HP

If none of the above have a replacement keyboard you can always try eBay, how ever you get what you pay for with eBay so I would insist on a money back gurantee from the seller.

Hope this helps...
