Computer won't turn off after Windows shuts down

by Bob
(Cold Lake Alberta Canada)

My wife bought me your book Self Computer Repair Unleashed about 2 months ago. great book. I've got a real problem that I can't figure out.

I have a ASUS M3N72-O motherboard, that won't shutdown after Windows 7 shuts down.

The MB LED remains lit and all the fans remain running.

I have to use the power pack on/off switch to turn the machine off.

When I start it up I turn the power pack switch on, the computer powers up, green LED lit is on.

But the darn thing won't boot until I push the power switch on the front of the computer.

I've scanned for viruses with several programs, I've run CCleaner.

Have you got any suggestions on how to solve this type of problem.

Power on/off switch vs Power supply off/on switch
by: Support

Hello Bob,

Question: Is this a custom build? (Did you build it yourself?)

The computer has what is know as soft power switch, that is the motherboard controls the power on and off through the front panel switch. The power is never off, there is a small trickle of power to part of the motherboard that has a relay. When you press the front panel switch you are energizing the relay which in turn powers up the motherboard.

When you use the on/off switch on the power supply you are turning the power off to the motherboard and the relay. It is a true on/off switch. (I use a surge protector between the AC socket and my computer, I turn it off when I am not using the computer).

So for that part what you experience when you turn on the switch at the power supply you are powering up the motherboard and then the relay says: "I am not energized, power everything down"
So you have to press the button on the front of the computer to get it to start.

Now for your not shutting down problem:

Check you BIOS settings for Power, you need to set the "Power to off after Fail" (I haven't been in my BIOS for some time and am quoting from memory here).

What is happening is the Operating System is telling the motherboard to shut down and it does, however the BIOS is telling the motherboard to restart when power fails so it never powers down.

(This is a reoccurring problem with newer desktops, maybe I'll do a write up in the next edition - When I find time to do some more major writing).

Hope this helps ...
