Computer keeps turning itself off/mouse doesn't work

by Sheyanne
(Nebraska)

As the title says, my computer keeps turning itself off while I'm trying to use it. Sometimes it will be on for a few minutes but the last time I tried to turn it on, it made the tiniest sound and turned off again without even trying. I blew ALL the dust out from inside the tower. Do I just need to get a new fan? I had this issue a year after I got the computer and the fan needed to be replaced.

Also, while the Properties window tells me my mouse is working properly, it clearly isn't: when I click something on the Desktop, everything else gets highlighted, and it won't let me double-click. Do I need a new mouse too??

Unedpected shut down of computer
by: Support

Hello Sheyanne,

A couple of things will cause the computer to power up then shut down right away.

One would be the processor fan is not working and the processor is getting to the point where it could be damaged from heat and then it powers off.

Another thing that will do the same thing is either the power supply is/has failed or the fan in the power supply has failed.

You can test these two theroies by opening the computer case and watch the fan on the processor when you power it up.

You can do the same with the power supply, if you can't see the fan then put your hand behind the computer close to where the fan would exhast the air and power up the computer, do you feel any air.

If you have a yes to both of these tests then I would say the power supply needs replaced.

If you have a no to the processor fan then that needs to be replaced.

If the fan in the power supply has failed you will have to replace the power supply, DO NOT open a power supply! If you know anyone that is a Certified Electrician then maybe they would repalce the fan, but unless you know and understand the consiquences of touching one of the components don't attempt to repair the power supply!

As for the mouse problem it sounds like one of the shif keys is stuck down, or the 'Sticky key' utility has a shift key on.

Try this, open note pad and type something with out using the shif key, then use the shift key? Did it work the way it was supposed to or did the inverse happen? That is did the type turn out to be Captials when it should have been lower case.

Hope this helps...
