Computer fails to boot

by Richard
(Kansas)

Monte,

This is a friend's computer.

While trying to boot up an older computer, I get a message that the system driver files are corrupt or not available.

Naturally, he does NOT have a back of his system.

Cannot boot into Safe Mode

I have attempted to run Repair from the OS system disk, no help when the help screen appears it request to push the letter r, and insert the floppy in drive A. Since he has no back-up there is no information on a floppy to insert into the drive.

I could not find an answer in your e-book Computer Repair Manual.

I could just say forget it and copy files, then reformat the hard drive. I have a feeling the hard drive may be on it's way out!

Any suggestions?

Thank for your time.

Operating System files corrupt
by: Support

Hello Richard,

The last OS to use a floppy disk to write the recovery files to was Windows 2000, XP and up create a System Restore files on the hard drive when you do the System Restore backup.

I would say that your best bet would be to backup the data and then format and install an OS, maybe upgrade the computer (if it isn't to old) to Vista or Windows 7.

I have found that for XP and Vista the System Restore is useless at best, Windows 7 System Restore works only if you take the time to keep it up to date. (And that is why it isn't in my manuals).

Hope this helps...
