Clarifying questions from your Computer Repair Unleashed

by Jeff

I just finished your computer repair unleashed ebook. I have a few questions to clarify what I read.

1. Hardware Firewalls
I'm trying to make sure that I understand what exactly these are. Could you provide some links of where to buy one so that I'm certain that I've got the right idea in my head.

2. Virtual Computing.

Isn't this the ultimate security solution? Wouldn't that mean that you could surf the net on a virtual machine and be safer or am I missing something?

3. FSB Speeds, memory speeds, processors, etc...

I'm trying to build a new computer and the only thing that confuses me still is the speed rates. I've read your ebook about FSB speeds and memory speeds but I have a hard time finding these figures on websites like newegg.com, especially FSB speeds. How can I make sure that my components are going to be used to their full potential and not buy more memory or speed than the motherboard can handle?

For example, I have a friend who just bought a computer with a Core 2 Duo processor and 8 Gigs of ram. For some reason that seems like a lot of ram and I wonder if his processor can even process that much ram.

4. Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, firewalls

What anti programs and firewalls do you use personally? (I just want an opinion on some good ones.)

Thanks so much for your ebooks.

Jeff

Answers for questions about the Self Computer Repair Unleashed book
by: Support

Hello Jeff,

Thank you for the comments on my Self Computer Repair Unleashed e-book.

Good idea putting a hardware firewall between your computer(s) and the internet. I use Linksys routers, you can find them on newegg.com, search for linksys.

I use a VM (Virtual Machine by VM Ware) for my testing and sometimes doing searches on the internet. If you are going to places you know are inhabited by hackers that will try to infect your computer with viruses by using a VM your computer will be protected. If the VM gets infected all you have to do is delete it. (I have setup a couple of different OS's for the VM's and make copies of them to use for the experimenting). Then if one gets infected I just delete it and make a new copy of the OS that was deleted.

FSB is controlled by the speed of the memory and the channel type. If you have single channel memory and the speed of the memory is 800 MHz then the FSB will be 800 MHz. How ever if you have Dual Channel memory the FSB will be half the speed of the memory. If the memory is 800 MHz then the FSB will be 400 MHz.

If you have a 32 bit Operating System (OS) the maximum memory that can be seen is 3.25 Gig of physical memory this is a limitation of the OS not the physical hardware.

However if you have a 64 bit OS then it will see all of the memory installed on the motherboard.

And yes the processor can use all that memory.

As for AV I use Grisoft AVG and have for the last fifteen years. I have only came across one virus that it could not find or clean. But four other AV programs couldn't find it or clean it either it was the wmpscfgs.exe virus (see my
Fix It Blog
for an article).

Hope this helps...
