CD DVD stopped working

by Rachel Blair
(Marysville, OH)

My CD/DVD stopped working. I replaced it with a new one and still nothing. It shows on the hardware profile with a yellow exclamation point. I deleted it and rebooted and it does the same thing. I put a CD in and the light flashes about 10 times and then nothing. What could the problem be? (the same thing was happening with the old one.) Also I tried to update the driver and it says I have the latest version.
Thanks

CD/DVD Error
by: Support

Hi Rachel,

If you replaced the CD/DVD and the activity light is coming on when you start the computer or when you put a disk in the drive then the power is not the problem.

You say that in the Device Manager the drive has a yellow icon and says that the device is not operational.

With this information one of two things can be at fault:

The cable has become disconnected from the motherboard interface or it is damaged.

Or -

The drive select for the CD/DVD is wrong.

Check the cable first, is it secure?

If you still have a failed device then if you have the hard drive and the CD/DVD on the same cable check the drive jumpers, one should be Master (normally the hard drive) and slave (normally the CD/DVD).

If the CD/DVD is on a cable by itself then the cable may have failed. Also the drive jumper should be on either Master or Cable Select (CS) if it is on the cable by itself.

Hope it helps...
