Can't find system drive when booting from ERD

by Brett
(Knoxville, TN)

I have a laptop (ThinkPad T60) and it came from our corporate office. I can usually use ERD to reset the computer's admin password and then had it to our OU in our AD domain but for some reason it doesn't find the OS drive after booting up. Does anyone know what I am forgeting or what I can do to access the system drive using ERD?

IDE or SATA
by: Support

Hello Brett,

The T-60 was the change over point for IDE and SATA hard drives.

What I am assuming is that you ERD disk does not have SATA drivers and your T-60 has a SATA drive.

What you can do is go to Leveno's web site or the drive manufactures web site and download the SATA interface drivers. Then following the instructions either put them on a floppy disk or a USB drive.

When you start ERD watch the bottom of the screen, you will see a message that says 'To install addtional drivers press F6'

You will need to be fairl attentive and fast because the message only lasts 3-5 seconds.

Once you have pressed F6 ERD will continue to load for a few minutes then will prompt you for the floppy disk, you can use an USB drive, you will have to tell the install program where it is.

If you have the ERD builder program you can add the drivers to the CD when you build it, this makes it easier when you start ERD, it will have the SATA drivers.

Hope this helps...

Thinkpad SATA Drive Access Solution
by: Cameron

I just had this issue and it turned out to be the SATA Drive settings in the CMOS. Change them from AHCI mode to "Compatibility" mode and when you boot from either the ERD Commander or from the Windows Disk to use the recovery console, the drive will now be accessible.

Hope this helps someone!

after spending one full day in trying to attach to a Lenovo machine with a SATA drive, I finally stumbled across your hint - it worked.

Thank you very much :-)

Thanks Cameron!

I tried switching from AHCI mode to what ever there was available and it now recognizes that there is a hard-drive.
