Cannot set up my router

by Ralph
(Moody TX)

I have a linksys system router I am trying to get it to operate.

I have an air card by at&t (875U). I am on windows vista operating system 160 GB HD.

I have tried 3 time to get it to connect with the blue cable plugged into the computer but to no avail.

Do I connect the blue cable that came with it to the computer or leave it off?

Thank you for your assistance with this problem. Your web page is great.

Setting up a Linksys Router
by: Support

Hello Ralph,

Did you have cd that came with the router? That will have a setup and help file for the router.

With the router powered up only plug in the blue cable from your computer to the Lan connection on the back of the router.

Your router may have five ports or two ports.

If it has two ports then look at the ports they will be labeled WAN and LAN, if you have a five port router there will be four ports and then one port by itself. The single port is the WAN port that will connect to the cable/dsl modem. Plug the blue cable (Cat5e cable) in to one of the four ports.

Power up your laptop, connect the Cat5e cable to the laptop.

Once you have logged on the laptop go to the Network Properties page. Right click on the Network Card (not the wireless) and bring up the properties.

Check to see if the TCP/IP is set to DHCP (Acquire IP automatically) if it isn't then click the radio button to enable the DHCP.

Click apply and close the page.

Next go to the run command on the start button, type in cmd.

This will bring up a DOS box, type this in: ipconfig

Press enter, it may fill up the box and scroll down, scroll back to the top, you are looking for:

IP Address....192.168.1.0

or

IP Address....192.168.0.1

That is what you will need to put in your browser to get to the setup page for the router.

If you don't get the page then check your browser settings the connection tab then the Lan Settings button, the box for Automatically detect settings should be checked.

Once you get to the setup page then follow the suggestions on the Router setup page.

I discuss this and more starting on page 203 in the Self Computer Repair Unleashed! Manual

Hope this helps...
