Can I restore files that were deleted from the recycle bin?

by Joe
(Mayville, NY, USA)

Hello,

Last year I started writing pages for a potential site, actually started the site, and then changed my mind on it. I wrote several pages, saved them as word documents and uploaded them into SBI - as I normally do.

When I decided I no longer wanted to write about that topic, I went through the process with SBI of changing domain names, etc... And I also deleted all the word documents. I actually deleted the entire folder that the documents were in...and then emptied the recycle bin.

I just realized I could use that information for another project I'm working on. Usually I save everything forever - and never end up needing it. The one time I delete my work...I need it.

So, I'm wondering if there's a way to find/restore those documents and/or SBI pages? I've tried several searches on my computer using different file extensions - but can't seem to find anything.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Joe

Recovering deleted files
by: Support

Hello Joe,

Unfortuneately when you empty the Recycle bin the file location and file name is deleted.

There are a few programs that will recover files that have been deleted, GetDataBack will do the job but it is a shareware program and with out buying it you can only recover one or two files.

I own it and have used it a couple of times, works pretty good, if you download it read the docs before you pay for it, it may not do what you need to do.

Do a search for 'undelete' you may find some free programs that will do the same thing.

I will caution you that the chance of recovering those files are slim to none.

Why?

Because when you delete a file and then empty the recycle bin the file location and file name are removed from the MFT (Main File Table) and that space is marked as empty. When the hard drive controler needs to write a new file it looks for 'virgin, contigous space' first. Then it uses any space that has been used before.

To understand this process the hard drive tries to write a file to the hard drive in one big chunk, and it tries to write it where nothing has resided before. But if your hard drive is over say 60 - 70% full then the hard drive controler may have to write in places where files have been deleted.

If you have done a defragment of the drive then no program can recover your files.

Hope this helps...
