Boot screen (and Ubuntu) stretch beyond monitor
by Prashanth
(Bangalore, India)
Hello,
I have an old P4 desktop with dual boot - XP and Kubuntu. I had some problems with my monitor - had strange resolutions and monitor getting switched off for no reason. Now, the monitor is repaired and all set but having a strange problem.
The resolution seems low and the whole screen is stretched beyond the monitor during boot (Grub 2 menu, even XP boot screen, Kubuntu boot screen) and also in Kubuntu after logging on. In XP things looked the same - I just removed the display card (integrated intel MB - through hardware properties) and allowed it to reboot. Then I could adjust the resolution to 1024x768 and it is working fine ever since.
First I suspected a problem with Kubuntu and ended up doing a fresh install of Lucid, but that has not helped. If I adjust the resolution inside Kubuntu the resolution does change, but the display again does not get "adjusted" to monitor. In XP though the display looks just fine, all the games (for example Age of Empires 2) think I am having a bigger monitor - the screen stretches beyond the monitor. Even the XP installer thinks in the same way.
I did the following: 1. Checked the monitor with a friend's system - it seems to be displaying fine there 2. Got the CPU to work on a friend's monitor - again no problems there.
Unless I have taken off in a tangent, it seems as though the problem is with this combination. How should I go about resolving this problem? Thanks.

Your problem sounds like the resolution you want is not being retained when the monitor is powered on/intialized by the computer.
It could be a bent pin in the connector or it could be a software problem with either the monitor or the drivers.
Check all the pins in the connector on the monitor cable. To straghten a bent pin I use an old retractable ball point pen, it will slide over the pin and gently work the bends out to straghten it. You can use a small set of needle nose plires but you have to be very careful to not crush the pin. The pens are hollow and are very flimsy, it doesn't take much pressure to collapse the pin.
If it isn't a bent pin then it could be the monitor can not hold the settings you want.
On the monitor is a control panel for setting the brightness, skew, ect. Some are controled by push buttons on the front bazel. Have you tried setting the monitor from there?
If you have set the monitor from the control panel and it is still out of range when restarted check the frequency that the OS has for the video driver, if the monitor is say a 60 Hz frequency and the driver settings are set for 62 or 64 Hz then the screen would be skewed.
The skewing (video image larger than the dispaly) is an indication that the monitor is being over driven, either by the computer or a fault in the hardware.
If you can't control the frequency and resolution with the software of the OS then see if there is an updated driver for your video card.
Hope this helps...

Thank you! by: Prashanth
The frequency is certainly the problem, it was there all along and I was stupid enough not to notice it. I still do not seem to get it right, but should eventually get to that point. Thanks a lot for your help!
