Antivirus Programs Killing My Computer? Driving Me Nuts!

by Kermit
(El Paso, Texas U.S.A)

Monte,
Antivirus programs that I have installed in the past caused more agravation than I could stand so have been running without them, not using my Administrator account. But set up a second user account to use the internet and only download from trusted sites.

I found one today that I decided to download it is freeware you don't have to turn off your Microsoft Firewall and it is very easy to install and set up. (Required a restart for vista before I could change the settings) No problen loading the 32 bit program on the 64 bit XP Pro Media Edition on my laptop. Works with Windows 7. Does not use a lot of memeory.

Microsoft's "Security Esecentials" I will say no more. Have you any experance with this program?

Enjoyed your latest Fix-it. RSS link to My Yahoo.

Anti virus programs
by: Support

Hello Kermit,

Some AV (Anti Viurs) programs don't play well with some Operating Systems.

Why?

Because they rely on a support server to keep the data base and program up to date and for security.

Having worked in a corporate environment that did use programs like Symantec AV, McAfee AV, and MS Security Essentials.

These programs rely on a server to download the latest data updates, program updates, and security. This is one of the reasons the program needs access through a firewall and/or a proxy.

The program publisher will have a support server (or servers) to update the program and the data files. But if the server is on the local network these programs will not have as many problems that small business or a home user will experience.

Personally I use AVG by Grissoft and have not expeanced any problems in over fifteen years.

Hope this helps...
