Advice for School Technology Refresh, Desktop vs. All-in-One

by Jonathan
(Lampe MO)

Right now we have 25 desktop computers and we do our own repairs.

We are wondering if we should continue to invest in desktops for this reason.

But we have been offered a great up-front price on new all-in-one computers.

Will we be able to make repairs or are they going to be more expensive in the longrun?

We usually keep a computer in service for 8-10 years and want to take a good step forward with the new Intel Core2 i5 processors.

Repiar of an All-in-one computer vs. traditional desktop
by: Support

Hello Jonathan,

If you read though some of the submissions and comments in this forum you will see there are a lot of drawbacks to the All-in-one computers.

With that said you need to take in to consideration the training that your techs would need for working on those computers.

Getting to the devices/motherboard is about the same as working on a laptop, and not all laptops cases open the same, some are easy like a desktop, remove some screws slide a panel off and you have access.

Others take some time and care in 'cracking' the case to avoid breaking key locking points on the case. Toshiba is the worst of all to open.

Another consideration is you probably have a Domain to control access to the computers and all most all new computers come with Windows 7 Operating System loaded. Although Windows 7 is backwardly compatible with older Windows Server Operating Systems and Domain installations it would do better for your security if you migrated your Domain up to Server 2008.

Unless you can get the new computers loaded with Windows XP (which I suspect you have now).

For a day to day usage with a lot of different users using the same computer you would probably want the most robust computer available for your budget and the All-in-one computers are not as robust as a desktop in my opinion and the experience that other owners have expressed in this forum.

I hope this opinion helps you make a wise decision for your new computers.
