ACER Aspire 3680

by Mike
(Plainville, CT.)

I have an ACER Aspire 3680 that will not boot up. If I put the Operating System disk in the cd/dvd drive it will go for a while then stop because it cannot find the hard drive. I was told it is because the cd/dvd drive is faulty but I believe the hard drive is shot. The only drives it shows are the cd/dvd and X drive so therefore I cannot format the hard drive and reload the OS. Can a laptop boot up without a cd/dvd drive? Thanks

Hard Drive problem
by: Support

Hi Mike,

I went to the ACER web site, seems they are no longer in the US of A, anyway I couldn't find them. And on their Europe/Asian web sites your computer isn't listed.

Try this:

Go in to your BIOS and see if it lists the hard drive.

If it has failed then it will not be listed.

At this point you have a choice, buy a new hard drive or a new computer.

The reason I went to ACER was to see how old the computer is and what options it has.

If you want to boot the computer from a non CD device then you could do it from a USB device such as an external hard drive or Pen (flash) drive. See my How To... section on making a bootable device.

Create a bootable USB device

Yes if your hard drive is dead then when you get to the part of the install where the installation program access the hard drive it will fail.

Hope this helps...

ACER 3680
by: Mike

The computer is about 2 years old. If I hit F2 when I turn on the laptop and go into steup it shows the BIOS version. When I let the laptop bootup it goes to the black screen with white letters stating no hard drive found. When I put in the Windows Vista disc and it gets to the loading part it can not find a location or drive to send the files to.
I am just trying to confirm that the hard drive is dead. I so called "compter expert" told me that the cd/dvd was no good but that works. I do not want buy a hard drive only to find out it is or could be something else.
Thank you for your help I greatly appreciate it.

Hard Drive
by: Support

Hi Mike,

I think if the computer can't see the hard drive and the Windows install CD can't see the hard drive then the hard drive maybe dead.

Is the computer under waranty?

If it is then contact their supprot.

If not then you could take the hard drive out and then put it back in, reseating the drive.

If that fails a cheap way to test the drive is take it out, is it IDE or SATA? Then buy an external hard drive enclosure and put it in the enclosure, connect the external drive to another computer and see if the other computer can see the hard drive.

If the drive is dead and you have to buy a new one you may want to consider a SSD (Solid State Drive) you can read about them here:

Upgrade SSD Installation

Almost all my laptops (5) have SSD's in place of the mechanical hard drives...

Hope this helps!
