Hello

Where to start?

Qwest came out to my house and replaced the router they installed five years ago with a DSL modem. Then the problems started.

They also changed all our email addresses from qwest.net to q.com and access went from an email client (such as Outlook or Eudora) to web based email. MSN Live email, I don't know if you use MSN Live but in my opinion it is worse than GMail by Google. It has major difficulties especially for a business. (This is another article for another time...)

The problems?

A few examples:

1) No access to my local web site

2) The DHCP changes every hour, not good if you are doing a redirect from your Domain Registar. (If you want to have a domain name but don't want to be tied to your local service provider you would register it with a Domain Registar company such as Godaddy).

3) The NAT (Network Address Translation) blocks access to my DSL Router where I have my special ports to access my local web site.

The Fix?

1) After a day of research (and resetting the modem and router every ten minutes because of the NAT) I found a couple of solutions.

2) One didn't work, but this one was a partial solution: Make the modem a bridge and turn off the router portion, unfortunately the NAT and DHCP problem persist.

3) I had to order a Static IP from Qwest to take care of the change of IP every hour, even the Qwest support techs couldn't answer why the lease time for an IP was so short.

4) Once the Static IP was effective I could get to my web site by IP but not by name, the NAT was blocking name resolution.

5) To resolve this problem I had to buy a new Linksys Router that has NAT (my old reliable is over 8 years old and did not have the NAT rules) and by turning on NAT in both the new router and the modem I can now access my web site from outside my network.

The lesson learned in this story? Be aware that technology is moving on and if you don't keep up with the changes it will bite you in the end...

As a Dad and soon to be a Grand Dad I have had my share of Christmas'. One of the things as a Dad was the Christmas Eve Santa. And the three words that strike terror in to all the soon to be Santa's:

Some Assembly Required!

Merry Christmas to you and yours from the Russell Household.
