Hello
For those in the US of A, a belated Happy Birthday America!
For those in Canada, a belated Happy Birthday Canada!
It has been a busy two months. I have completed my
Windows 7 Ultimate Guide
in preparation for it's release this month before the release of the new Windows 7 Operating System
in October of 2009.
(Note: I am planning on releasing my
new book this week and am running a pre-release special, if you would like
my best selling Build a Custom PC and $10 off the normal price you need to act
before the release date. This is a special offer only for my Newsletter and
E-Course readers at this time).
I have learned a lot about the new OS by testing it in various environments.
This is NOT Vista, although it may have some similarities, over all it is a
better OS. It is stable out of the box which is a first for Microsoft, usually
it takes one or two service packs before their Operating Systems are stable and
not full of problems.
In my field testing I tried to emulate a home environment and a work environment.
The home setup was two computers connected in what is called a peer to peer
network, that is no Domain, just the two computers sharing files and resources.
It went fairly smooth no problems that a regular computer user couldn't figure
out. The work environment was a little more challenging, mainly because my
Domain Operating System is Windows Server 2003. I won't go in to details here so
if you are having problems with getting Vista/Windows 7 to see a local domain
drop me a line either through my
Support page or the
Q and A page on my web
site.
These things really bug me about the Windows 7 OS.
First - The Explorer is now called 'Libraries'. Library is the new file
system that came with Vista. I really think Microsoft is messing up with this
one. I went to MS's web site searching for a replacement or a way to change the
file system back to the NT/Win2000/XP style file system. No such luck, the only
thing I found were a lot of complaints about the new file system, no fixes, no
changes.
Second - The way the Libraries work. The over all look and feel are more
Linux than the solid Windows of old. The new look and feel is also dynamic, that is
when you run the cursor (mouse pointer) over an icon the navigation opens up any
folders underneath it. To me this is disconcerting, I don't want the full tree
opened unless I click on it. This pop open causes the whole tree to jump and
sometimes I loose my place on where I wanted to go, so then I have to scroll up
or
down again. (This is on a 19" monitor and the 'Library" is from the top to the
bottom of the screen... this is stupid).
Third - Folders. The NT/Win2000/XP style folders are gone. If you make a
folder on the desktop what you are really making is a mirror copy of the
'Libraries'. That is a complete Explorer with all the navigation from the top to
bottom of what ever you have selected. Now some people will like this but it is
a waste of resources. I have checked the difference between a full library
and library with all the options turned off and it isn't that much. The waste
of resource is that one Library takes 8.6 meg, the second one takes 9.6 meg
and each folder you open there after is another 3 to 5 meg this
adds up with the more folders you make, especially if you make folders inside a
primary folder. XP on the other hand starts at 8.6 meg, the first folder adds
3.2 meg to the overall memory usage of the XP Explorer and each additional
folder adds 2 Meg. But when you open a folder it only increases the
overall memory usage by 32 K! That is about half of what the Libraries of
Windows 7 uses.
There is a work around that I have been testing, 3rd party add-ons (read it
costs money) for the Libraries, at this time I have just started to test them
and will give my evaluations at a later date.
Other news:
Pre-Order Widows 7 Operating System prices "As long as
supplies last"
- Windows 7 Home
Premium $44.95
- Windows 7 Professional $94.99
There isn't a price list for Ultimate or any of the 64 Bit versions at this
time.
Watch out for this one!
Google Desktop Search
services that it starts-
- infocard.exe (This service was not installed on my computer before
the search function!)
- Windows Firewall (I have this disabled because I am behind a
hardware/software firewall/proxy server).
Read about it here -

My Word -Internet theft is a growing problem (and will only get worse
with the recession) that has been around since the internet started (sorry Al
Gore did not invent the internet, I know, I was part of the original
'experiment' in 1967) I have written a very controversial article about it. It
may or may not get published. If it is published I will post the link here if
not then that is the way it goes in this new changing world.
